Location Hotel Welcombe, one of Sri Lanka’s most venerated hotels in the 1930s/40s,
commands one of the finest views on Sri Lanka’s east coast. It stands
at the summit of Orr’s Hill, with a breathtaking view of Trincomalee harbour
and the surrounding landscape. The sweeping tropical beaches of Nilaveli are
about 15 minutes drive away and transport is readily available. Recommended
to those with an appreciation of Trinco’s history, who want to experience
its determination to clamber back to prosperity.
Accomodation Hotel Welcombe has been refurbished and updated as it strives to recapture
past glories now that the ceasefire between the government and the LTTE brought
has brought hopes of an end to the dislocation caused by civil war. It offers
a touch of urbane, old-world charm, as an alternative to the beach culture of
Nilaveli. The hotel, owned by a rich British planter, was completed in 1937,
and quickly became as popular as any on the island, before war intervened and
it was taken over by the navy.
Facilities 18 standard a/c rooms and four superior rooms with kingsize beds, all sea-facing,
with modern bathroom. A/c restaurant and bar. TV and minibar planned in all
rooms by end August. Sun deck overlooking harbour.
