The beach freaks have great opportunities in Sri Lanka. The palm fringed
sandy beaches and the warm waters around have the elusive power of sending a
visitor into ecstacy. You can take a dip in the tranquil waters or bask in the
sun on the soft white sand , see a flock of birds flyin freely or see the sun
vanishing down the eyeline from the crimson skies- you have time enough to
marvel at the magic of nature.
Trincomalee
It can boast of its beautiful natural harbour which is rated as one of the
finest of its kind in the world. Fort Frederick, which still echoes the air of
the colonial era, is one of the major attractions here.
Nilaveli
A major beach resort of the East Coast, Nilaveli is the ideal place for sun
bathing, sea bathing and diving. A few meters away from the shore is a small
rocky island which provides a good location for snorkeling.
Kalkudah and Passekudah
Declared as a National Holiday Resort in 1973, the combined area of Passekudah
and Kalkudah is a perfect stretch for bathing, windsurfing and water skiing.
While Kalkudah Bay is a 2 km. long wide stretch of beach, Passekudah is 4 km.
long just south of Kalkudah.
Batticaloa
The prime attraction of this erstwhile colonial town is the ‘Singing Fish’ whose
musical notes can be heard distinctly on full moon nights. The sound is
attributed to this unique fish inhabiting the lagoon.
Reaching the East Coast
Since there are no domestic flight services in Sri Lanka, tourists can embark
upon a train journey from Colombo. Buses are also available, but they generally
remain crowded.
Staying There
Tourists can unpack at the various hotels and guest houses available in the
respective localities.
