Day01:ArriveColombo
Welcome, meet and assist at airport and transfer to Kandalama, Rest of the day
free, overnight stay at Kandalama Hotel, Occupying a unique site in the cultural
triangle's heartland, Kandalama Hotel is flanked by two UNESCO World Heritage
Sites, the 1st Century BC Dambulla rock temple and the 5th Century AD Sigiriya
rock fortress. Overnight stay at Kandalama Hotel. (B)
Day02:Kandalama
Morning excursion to Dambulla. (The name Dambulla derives from Damba rock and
Ulla fountain). This is one of the most impressive Buddhist Temples in the World,
showing the evolution of the Sinahalese Buddhist art. Afternoon excursion to Anuradhapura
- located in the northern central part of the island; Anuradhapura was the first
capital and undoubtedly the grandest city of ancient Sri Lanka. It is the home
of two UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Areas of interest include Sri Maha Bodhi (sacred
Bo tree) under which the Buddha attained enlightenment, it is over 2,200 years
old and is the oldest historically documented tree in the world. Overnight stay
at Kandalama Hotel.(B)
Day03:Polonnaruwa
Morning excursion to Polonnaruwa. King Parakramabah (1153-86) raised Polonnaruwa
to its heights erecting huge buildings, draining swamps and planting vast areas
with crops. He planned beautiful parks, created wildlife sanctuaries and restored
earlier monuments. The crowning achievement was the unification of the three orders
of monks, the Mahavihara, Jetavana and Abhayagiri into one Sangha or 'Supreme
Order of Monks'. This achievement ensured the survival of Buddhism in the centuries
ahead. Remainder of the day at leisure, overnight stay at Kandalama Hotel.(B)
Day04:Sigiriya
Morning excursion to Sigiriya rock fortress, built by King Kashyapa (477-495 AD).
The 'Lion Rock' is a citadel of unusual beauty rising 200 meters from the scrub
jungle. The rock was the innermost stronghold of the 70 hectare fortified town.
About halfway up the rock is a sheltered gallery of frescoes painted on the sheer
rock face. The 'Heavenly Maidens' are similar in style to the paintings of Ajantha
in India. Afternoon free. Overnight stay at Kandalama Hotel.(B)
Day05:Kandy
Morning departure for Kandy, enroute visit a spice garden in Matale to see the
different spices for which Sri Lanka is famous. Afternoon sightseeing tour of
Kandy; The last capital of the Sri Lankan kings, is now a World Heritage Site.
Visit the lake built by the last Sinhala king in 1798, the bazaar, the arts &
crafts center and gem museum. Evening visit to the 'Temple of the Sacred Tooth'
containing the tooth of Buddha followed by a cultural show featuring traditional
Sri Lankan dancing. Overnight stay at Earls Regency Hotel.(B)
Day06:Kandy
Morning excursion to Pinawala elephant orphanage. The orphanage is home to about
60 elephants, found abandoned or orphaned in the wild. Afternoon visit to the
Peradeniya Botanical Gardens; the botanical gardens were first built as a pleasure
garden by a Sinhala king and were later expanded by the British to 147 acres.
Day07:Kandy/NuwaraEliya
Morning departure for Nuwara Eliya, enroute visiting a tea factory. Upon arrival
in Nuwara Eliya, check in to the Tea Factory Hotel, a unique heritage hotel converted
from a tea factory. Afternoon free. Overnight stay. Surrounded by hills and tea
plantations, the town of Nuwara Eliya was a favourite retreat of the British during
colonial times, the town is dotted with English country style houses earning it
the name 'Little England'. Overnight stay at the Tea Factory Hotel.(B)
Day08:Nuwaraeliya
Spend the day at leisure or take an optional excursion to Horton Plains and World's
End. Horton Plains are located at about 7000ft elevation. The Plains are an expanse
of misty grassland with scraggy trees and ice-cold rivulets. World's End, a 3
hour round trek, is considered to be the finest view in all of Sri Lanka. The
awesome escarpment drops vertically for about 4000 ft, hence its name. Overnight
stay at the Tea Factory Hotel.(B)
Day09:NuwaraEliyaToAhungalla
Morning departure for beach hotel. Check in at Triton Hotel Ahungalla.(B)
